How do I become a Healthy School?
The process involved to becoming a Healthy School consists of eight steps, as detailed below:

9

Celebrate achievements and develop ways to build on the minimum criteria in the future.

8

Prepare for moderation

7

Self-Validate: send in a completed Audit Tool and Sign Off Sheet.  Set a moderation date and be clear about how you will evidence achievement for each criterion.

6

Identify staff professional development needs and use the support offered within each of the four themes.

5

Use the areas identified to set realistic, achievable and measurable targets.  Identify potential links with existing priority areas and curriculum areas.  Liaise with Maggie Sims and send in Audit Tool/Action Plan

4

Use the local Audit Tool to identify a baseline and identify areas for development; these will for the Action Plan.

3

Set up a task group with input from a range of the following: senior management, staff (plus non-teaching), pupils, governors, parents/carers, school health nurse, catering staff, Connexions (KS3/4)

2

Gain commitment for Healthy Schools from your school community and senior management team.

The Healthy Schools Team - Moderation Process
Once a school has reached step 8 (this is the point which the school are confident that within each theme the minimum criteria have been met), and send a copy of their completed Audit Tool/Action Plan with their Self-Validation Sheet signed, a date will be made for members of the Healthy Schools Team to visit the school in a 'moderation' role.  A set of questions and a programme for the visit will be sent into school.  As part of the moderation visit key people will be asked questions within each theme; hopefully children/young people will conduct a tour of the school and a school lunch provided.  It would also be good practice to meet with the school council, a governor and parent representatives, where possible.  A short report will be written up and sent into the school shortly after the moderation visit.  This report will acknowledge the strengths of the school in relation to the minimum criteria and where necessary suggest/make recommendations for any criteria that are part of an on going Action Plan.

When schools self-validate, having met the minimum criteria, the relevant information will be entered on the National Health Schools database.

School will be awarded 'Healthy Schools Status' and this will be kept for a maximum of three years before needing further moderated.

The Regional Co-ordinator will be responsible for the quality assurance of each Local Authority programme and may also request to visit some schools in the area.
