Work Related Learning

Work-related learning can be regarded as a collaboration between schools and businesses to enable all young people to
  • learn through work
  • learn about work
  • learn for work
The content and emphasis given to each of these work-related elements will differ by school age of pupils and their curriculum needs. Work-related learning programmes should offer pupils experience of the working environment and working practices and provides pupils with the opportunity to develop literacy, numeracy and key skills through the experience. It is expected to complement the pupil's education through the national curriculum and contribute, as far as possible, towards approved qualifications.

From September 2004, there will be a new statutory requirement for work-related learning at Key Stage 4.  Consultations on the nature of that statutory requirement have taken place during the Summer of 2003.  QCA will finalise the statutory requirement during the Autumn of 2003 and will produce a range of guidance to support schools in implementing whole school approaches to work-related learning during the Autumn and Spring terms.  Support at local level will be available through best practice networks and through development opportunities provided by the West of England increased flexibility consortium.

The new Ofsted framework includes a range of indicators of effectiveness in the leadership and management of work-related learning at whole school level.  Towards excellence in work-related learning is a PowerPoint presentation which captures and categorises these indicators to help inform planning for work-related learning.

To support schools in planning for the introduction of work related learning for all students at key stage 4 from September 2004, the West of England Increased Flexibility Consortium has produced a resource pack entitled Developing Whole School Approaches to Work-Related Learning - the document can be viewed and/or downloaded here
