Funding for ICT

Teachernet provides an overview relating to funding for ICT. http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/wholeschool/ictis/funding/ The site identifies the grants that include provision for ICT.

Guidance has been sent to all South Gloucestershire schools on this issue including a copy of the DfES publication Learning, Teaching and Managing with ICT: Funding Guidance for Schools and Local Authorities 2006 - 2007 which can be downloaded.

Purchasing Through South Gloucestershire Schools ICT

South Gloucestershire Education IT also provide support with purchasing resources. Schools involving the Schools ICT team in purchasing can expect that:
  • Recommended hardware/software will represent best value for money
  • Hardware/software will conform to at least the current minimum specification if not greater
  • Purchases will integrate with all known existing ICT systems
  • Schools will be advised of any likely installation and configuration requirements including technician time required
  • Warranty issues will be dealt with by Schools ICT
  • Purchased equipment will automatically be covered for schools subscribing to the gold and silver hardware repair scheme once the warranty runs out
  • Schools can request that new software be tested by Schools ICT prior to installation at school to minimise the effects of any possible malfunctions.

Purchasing Laptops

In response to requests from the E-education head teacher group another deal has

been negotiated for laptops with Ergo. The Curriculum and Schools IT team have liaised over ensuring the specification for these laptops will meet the needs of schools. The laptops can again be ordered directly through a web site and will be delivered directly to the school. The school will then be invoiced. The web site for ordering can be accessed at

 http://www.ergo.co.uk/schools/south_gloucestershire/main.html.

In order to simplify the ordering process this year there is one user name and password for all schools rather than a separate one for each school.
User name - southglos
Password is ergolft.

Schools wishing to order laptops to run on their school network (rather than just connection to the Internet) should order their laptops directly through the Schools IT department in order that they can be correctly configured. To do this contact Chris Stedman by telephone on 01454 863396 or by e-mailing Christopher.stedman@southglos.gov.uk.

School Action: Refer to your audit and School Improvement / ICT Plan to identify the number of laptops required. Order through the web site. SEF reference: Improving Quality of Provision.

Software

Curriculum online enables schools to search for software to support the curriculum. http://www.curriculumonline.gov.uk/Default.htm

Schools requiring recommendations about software are advised to look at the TEEM (Teachers Evaluating Educational Multimedia). This site includes reviews by teachers of software and case studies of their use to support the curriculum.
http://www.teem.org.uk/

Becta have a software licensing catalogue which includes a framework agreement for non-curriculum software such as operating systems and graphics and publishing software.
http://procurementtools.becta.org.uk/

Purchasing software through the Teaching and Learning Advisory Team can save you money. Check with the team prior to ordering software as there may be a money saving deal already in place or it may be possible to negotiate one. Contact Sue Morgan on (01454) 868652.

South West Grid for Learning have also worked with a number of suppliers to negotiate discounts and information is available on this.
