Founded in 1683, the Ashmolean is one of the oldest public
museums in the world. The art collection dates from
1845. Courses have been organised for teachers since

Founded in 1885, the Fine and Applied Art Collections include
a famous group of Pre-Raphaelites. The gallery offers

This Regency town has an interesting collection dating from
late Victorian times. It offers Inset courses on
chosen areas of focus inspired by the displays. There
are also workshops to develop practical skills available but
these are open to all adults, not only teachers. |

Housed in a splendid Edwardian baroque building, the gallery
is one of six museums maintained by the city. More
education staff have been recruited using new central
government funding under the 'Renaissance in the Regions'. |

The Courtauld Institute of Art, founded in 1932 for the study
of art history, now forms part of the University of London.
It has one of the most important collections in Britain,
including world famous Old Master, Impressionist and Post
Impressionist paintings. There are one-week spring and
summer schools led by distinguished academics. The
cost is £350. |

'The most beautiful gallery in the world' has outstanding 17th
and 18th century old masters. Full day courses
typically offer a gallery tour linked to a specific theme,
illustrated talk and lecture theatre discussion and an art
studio practical session. Refreshments and lunch are
included. Courses are individually priced.
Teachers can meet the education department at private views
when temporary exhibitions are on. Term courses
include the Saturday Art School while well-known artists
provide masterclasses. One-day 'taster' courses
experiment with new media while four-day beginners' courses
included 'Drawing for the Terrified'. |

The art museum of the University of Cambridge was founded in
1816. It offers a constantly changing programme of
courses to meet the needs of the teaching profession,
running whole and half days. Charges are usually: £25
per teacher for half-day and £50 per teacher for whole-day
courses. In addition it can organise tailor-made inset
courses for a whole school staff, the staff of a department,
or a group of headteachers, inspectors etc. Charges
are £150 for three hours and £250 for six hours. |

After destruction by enemy action in 1941, the historic
gallery was not reopened until 1999. It contains
well-loved Victorian paintings and a wide selection of
Londons Subjects. Occasional teachers' evenings for
specific exhibitions but there is no regular CPD otherwise.
Bespoke CPD is possible if teachers ask. |

The gallery is one of the largest temporary art exhibition
spaces in Britain. Fine-tuning education resources for
each exhibition, the Hayward offers free study sessions for

The City Art Gallery is one of the eight sites comprising
Leeds Museums and Galleries. It has collections of
British art in a variety of media from the 19th century,
including contemporary artworks. It runs inset courses
introducing art galleries as resources for cross-curricular
activities. Day schools and seminars, both practical
and discussion-based, are organised to coincide with
temporary exhibitions. |

The Lowry is the largest arts centre outside London, an
architectural flagship in regenerated docklands. As
well as the gallery, with 350 of Lowry's works alongside
contemporary exhibitions, there are two theatres for
performing arts. Its courses develop skills and
brainstorm project ideas through discussion and practical
activity. Cost is £200 full day / £125 part day for
upto 7 teachers, or £25 / teacher for full day or £15 /
teacher for part day for eight or more teachers.

The City Council runs four venues: Manchester Art Gallery, the

Founded as a private institute on 1984, the Tabernacle Trust
has become the main venue for Wales' top artist in a series
of temporary exhibitions. There is no formal education
programme but 'Midday, Market Day' is a series of Wednesday

The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of
European painting in the world. NG Education organises
one-day CPD courses for primary and secondary teachers.
The courses are both for individual teachers and whole
staffs. CPD days include talks in front of the
paintings by gallery staff. A full programme of

Stanhope,Macaulay, Carlyle and Disraeli were eminent
Victorians who caused the creation of the NPG for 'portraits
to consist as far as possible of those persons who are most
honourably commemorated in British History'. In autumn
2004 NPG will be introducing a range of illustrated lectures
for adult group. There is no charge, but a donation of
about £2 per head is appreciated. Teachers who are
also amateur artists may attend courses in the Clore Studio,
run by practising artists. Courses generally last one
day, include a talk and discussion in the main gallery,
followed by drawing or painting in the studio. Courses
are free unless expensive materials are used. |

The Summer Exhibition is the world's largest open submission
exhibition, held each year since 1769. The RA's
Education Department offers a wide range of materials and
services to education professionals. Evening events examine
aspects of current exhibitions. The Schools and
Colleges programme is designed to support teachers with an
extensive programme of gallery visits, gallery talks,
workshops, education evenings and Inset events. |

Henry Tate's vision was of a gallery devoted exclusively to
the national school. CPD for teachers and trainee
teachers comprises courses and study days to understand the
galleries and develop subject knowledge. Of possible
interest to teachers are short courses, study days and
workshops for adults. An example of a day course for
teachers is 'Developing Sketchbooks' where work is done in
the gallery. The cost is £40 including a sketchbook.
'Ways of Looking' includes questioning frameworks,
discussion and task-based activities for working in the
gallery. A full day costs £50 including snacks and
lunch. Special private views of major exhibitions are
held during evening throughout the year, often including a
guest speaker and short talks by curators. |

leading gallery for modern art. Inset courses and
teachers' conferences provide CPD opportunities.
Titles include The Working Sketchbook; Sculpture and
Installation; Art and Language; Working with Resources; The
Treason of Images: Teaching Modern Art. Cost is either
£35 or £40 including refreshments and lunch.
Tailor-made full-day courses for at 10 teachers costs £500,
including refreshments and lunch. Half-day courses are
proportionately less. Artist teacher three-day summer
schools are held that include sketchbook, lunch and all
refreshments. There are also short courses, study days
and workshops for adults, which may be of interest to
teachers. |
